photo: tohlejokes.comDuring employees’ open-enrollment period, their employer may offer them a choice between an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization), or a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization). If an employee chooses HMO, he or she can choose or will be assigned a primary care physician. That primary care physician will act as the “quarterback” for most of his or hers health needs. If depending on one’s symptoms, one’s primary care physician determines that he or she should see a specialist, they will refer that employee to one.
In most cases, one’s primary care physician, will refer him or her to another physician within their medical group. The only exception to the referral rule is for a woman to self-refer to an ob-gyn of her choosing.
